What if my contact’s prison isn’t listed?

If the prison where your loved one is held isn’t on the list, Purple Visits isn’t available there right now.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Check the name. Prison names can be similar. Ask your loved one, or look at any official letter from the prison, for the exact name.
  2. Ask the prison. Contact the prison directly and ask which video calling service they use. They’ll tell you how to book.
  3. Check back. New establishments are added from time to time. The establishments directory is always up to date.
  4. Look at other ways to stay in touch. Phone calls, letters and family support services are covered in Too far to visit? Your options.

Getting started at your establishment

Once you’ve found your loved one’s prison on the list:

  1. Read their establishment page. It shows the call schedule, call length (30 or 60 minutes), who can book (you, the person in prison, or either), and contact details.
  2. Set up your account. Follow Getting started. You’ll need photo ID, proof of address and their prison number – see What ID do I need?
  3. Add your contact. See Adding a contact.
  4. Book your first call. See Requesting a video call. At prisons in England and Wales the MoJ funds up to 60 minutes a month of free calls, subject to availability – see Free video calls explained.

Every establishment sets its own rules on schedules, booking windows, cancellation notice and who can join a call. Always check your establishment’s page for the current details.
